Obituary for Joseph Edward "Ed" Addington

Joseph Edward “Ed” Addington went to Heaven on Resurrection Sunday, April 21, 2019. Born in Wise County, VA, August 2, 1926 he was the son of the late Joseph Jackson Addington and Ethel Perkins Addington.

Ed served in the United States Army in WWII as a Combat Engineer. One of his jobs was to enter Hiroshima after the A Bomb was dropped, before they understood the long effects of radiation. He was a true example of "the great generation". With limited education he became an outstanding electrician and foreman working in the shipyard in Virginia.

He was retired from Pittston Coal Company where he was a mine superintendent. This was accomplished through common sense and hard work. Qualities that are rare today. He was a dedicated Christian of the Pentecostal faith and member of the Harman Freewill Baptist Church. In his younger years Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing and lakeing. Later in life he liked to work in his garden, but most of all he loved going to church. A loving Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather and Great Great-Grandfather.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Emma Jean Skeens Addington, son, Edward Eugene Addington; daughter, Lucille McClanahan; step sons, Billy Joe Elswick, Mark Elswick; sisters, Shirley Joyce, Marie Smith, Jean Eure, his brother Dallas Addington, and son-in-law Jamie Scott.

He is survived by his daughters, Tammy (Michael) Fletcher of Grundy, VA, Pamela (Ralph) Monk of Claypool Hill, VA; sons, Bobby Harold (Roxanne) Addington of Racine, WI, Dean (Kathy) Addington of Wise, VA; step daughters, Melissa Elswick Davis of Grundy, VA, Nancy (Roy) Sims of Chattanooga, TN; step son, Gregory Todd (Susan) Elswick of Grundy, VA; sister, Juanita Smith of Clinton, TN and his brother Jack D. Addington of Richlands, VA.

He was also survived by fourteen grandchildren, twelve step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
